WARHOLMANIA July 13 2014
An artist is somebody who produces things that people don't need to have
We artists here at Team Print Shop are back with some rad stuff you don’t need. Over the past few months we have collaborated with a few of our favorite comrades in design to bring you Andy Warhol inspired prints. Guided by the legend of Warhol, we challenged three of our buddies from diverse corners of the art world to rethink iconic Warhol design. Departing from the style and subject matter that these guys have become known for, they created designs you don’t need but will not be able to live without.
We met ANGEL DIAZ a few years back and have become big fans of his car art. A screenprinter at Forward Printing and comic book artist, he’s known throughout the industry for his style of using halftones to make gradients. Using this style, he created a t-shirt design of the classic Andy vs. Basquiat poster (a killer collaboration between two crazy-art world heavy weights).
While thinking about what artists to collaborate on the project, we came across a Polaroid photo of Andy and immediately thought of JASON PHILLIPS. Dude loves pun. The man behind the grim rapper (check out his drawing of the grim reaper with a microphone) is known for his traditional tattoo style. Jason’s designed a rad limited edition (only 35 prints kind of limited) classic cruiser deck.
Winner of a recent big stakes Team Print Shop raffle, SMO is a renowned animator known for his work on Super Jail and Metalocalypse. We’re fans of his 20’s style cartoons and his metal guys and asked him to take on the challenge of combining both with Warhol’s iconic Cambell’s can. Printed on a cotton tote bag that measures 14.75 inches wide by 15.5 inches in length.
The reflective sort, our JOHN REAM found inspiration for his contribution to the Warhol challenge while watching WrestleMania I. Blown away by the significance of the event and the celebrities that the event brought together (Liberace, The Rockettes, Muhammad Ali, and Mr. T), John was inspired by the man himself for this collaboration. Turns out Warhol was a big fan of WWF and, at the event, told interview Mean Gene: "It's the best thing I've ever seen in my whole life... the most exciting thing". Screen-printed on a plexiglass panel that measures 8 inches wide by 6 inches tall, Ream’s print comes as a signed edition of 20.
